USI falls in series finale, 10-7

MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball could not hold an early lead and lost the series finale to the University of Tennessee at Martin, 10-7, Sunday afternoon in Martin, Tennessee. USI is 21-26 overall and 10-11 in the OVC, while UTM is 18-28, 9-11 OVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles had command of the series finale early by scoring twice in the first and third innings. USI loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch to start the game before junior designated hitter Charlie Marisca drew an RBI walk and junior leftfielder Hunter Miller forced in a tally after reaching on an error to make the score, 2-0.
 
The Eagles would strike again in the third inning when sophomore second baseman Anthony Umbach drove in a run after singling in a suicide squeeze attempt and junior shortstop Clayton Slack got an RBI by driving a sacrifice fly deep to right field.
 
The margin increased to 5-0 for USI in the fourth on an RBI double by junior first baseman Cole Kitchens. The Eagles would hold the 5-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Skyhawks scored five times to knot the game up at 5-5.  
 
USI would jump back in front, 7-5, in the top of the fifth when sophomore third baseman Parker Martin singled through the right side to score Slack and Umbach with two outs. The Skyhawks pulled to within one with a tally in the seventh before senior right-hander Ian Anderson got the Eagles out of a two-on, one-out jam to preserve the 7-6 lead.
 
The Eagles' luck would run out in the eighth, as the Skyhawks scored four times with two outs to take the lead for the eventual 10-7 final.
 
Anderson (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season in relief. He allowed four runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings of work.
 
USI junior right-hander Andres Gonzalez started and got a no-decision. Gonzalez threw the first 3.1 innings, allowing two tallies on two hits and two walks, while striking out three.
 
Up Next for the Eagles:
The Screaming Eagles return to the USI Baseball Field for the final homestand of the season. The homestand starts Tuesday (May 6) at 6 p.m. when the University of Evansville visits the USI Baseball Field for the first time since 1987.
 
The Purple Aces are 14-32 overall after losing a three-game series with Belmont University this weekend. The Aces have lost four-straight games after the series with Belmont and seven of the last eight.
 
Evansville leads the all-time series with USI, 35-21, after the squads split a doubleheader in February. The Eagles took the opener, 9-1, while the Aces captured the nightcap, 13-0.
 
After USI hosts UE, the Eagles finish the 2025 OVC home schedule by welcoming Southeast Missouri State University for a three-game series May 9-11. The homestand concludes May 13 when UE returns to the USI Baseball Field for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
 
SEMO is 27-21 overall and 13-8 in the OVC after being swept by Tennessee Tech University in OVC action this weekend. The Redhawks are 5-5 in their last 10 games after today.
 
USI and SEMO are tied in the overall series, 28-28, after the Redhawks took two-of-three in the season series in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and knocked the Eagles out of the OVC Tournament last May.
