CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Softball fell 4-1 in the series-opening game at Southeast Missouri State University on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's results dropped Southern Indiana (13-22, 10-10 OVC) into a tie for fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with Tennessee State University. Meanwhile, Southeast Missouri (22-14, 15-6 OVC) remained third in the OVC standings.
Southeast Missouri scratched across an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff baserunner came around to score to give the Redhawks an early 1-0 advantage. SEMO scored three more runs off four hits in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 4-0 lead.
Southern Indiana generated a quality opportunity in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk. However, SEMO senior pitcher Delaney Kell pitched out of the jam to keep USI off the scoreboard.
In the top of the sixth inning, senior outfielder
Kennedy Nalley led off the frame with her third hit and second double of the game. After advancing in the next at-bat on a wild pitch, Nalley came home to score on a sac fly by senior infielder
Whitley Hunter to bring USI within three, 4-1. However, that was all USI could get for the rest of the game, as SEMO sealed the series-opening win.
Nalley tallied three of Southern Indiana's four hits while Hunter accounted for the other USI hit. For Nalley, it was the senior's first three-hit game and first 3-3 game at the plate since the 2022 season as a freshman.
In the pitching circle, senior pitcher
Josie Newman (8-14) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – with four strikeouts in a complete six innings.
Kell (8-3) picked up the win for SEMO after giving up just one run and also tossing a complete game.
