EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer had its 2024 home opener spoiled by Bellarmine University, 8-0, Saturday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles, who started a five-match homestand tonight, are 0-6-0, while the Knights go to 2-2-2.
USI fell behind early, allowing three tallies in the opening 45 minutes. Bellarmine would follow up in the second half with five more goals and took home an 8-0 victory.
The Knights dominated offensively from the opening kickoff, posting a 22-9 lead in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. USI had a few close chances in each half (2 shots on-goal in the first and second half) that could have changed the course of the match, but the Eagles could find the back of the Knights' goal.
NEXT UP FOR USI:
The Eagles continue the five-match homestand Tuesday when they host former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Purdue University Fort Wayne. Purdue Fort Wayne saw its record go to 3-2-1 after defeating the University Wisconsin Milwaukee this evening, 2-0. The Mastodons come to Evansville having won their last two matches.
USI will be hosting Purdue Fort Wayne (formerly Indiana University/Purdue University Fort Wayne) for first time since the Eagles moved to Division I and the Mastodons' departure from the GLVC. The Eagles have an 11-3-1 series lead over the Mastodons after USI won the last meeting in 2000, 2-1, in overtime.
