Eagles overpowered by Leathernecks in series sweep

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball (8-13, 3-6) were overwhelmed in a straight sweep against Western Illinois University (12-8, 6-3) in the series finale at Screaming Eagles Arena (23-25, 21-25,18-25).
 
Set 1: WIU 25, USI 23
The Eagles built an early 14-10 lead off a six-point run. Senior Carly Sobieralski shared the wealth dishing out assists to sophomore Leah Coleman (1), sophomore Ashby Willis (3), junior Bianca Anderson (2), senior Paris Downing (1), and senior Jasmine Green (2). Willis helped build the Eagles lead to 18-15 with her fourth kill. The Leathernecks mounted an 8-2 scoring run snatching the 23-20 lead. Anderson and Green responded with back-to-back kills. However, WIU clinched the match earning the next two points. USI falls to 5-16 in first sets on the season.
 
Set 2: WIU 25, USI 21
WIU used another big five-point run building an early 9-7 lead. Coleman started to heat up with two kills as the Eagles trailed 17-20. Anderson smashed her seventh kill on a slide making it 19-22. The Leathernecks refused to be stopped attacking the Eagles in all directions with an impressive .394 set hitting percentage and taking the first two sets. The Eagles hitting percentage through two sets was a respectable .238, but they struggled stopping the Leathernecks in crucial situations.
 
Set 3: WIU 25, USI 18
The Leathernecks carried their momentum into set three building a 6-1 lead. Anderson, Coleman, and Willis began to mix up their attacking contributing to tying the set at nine. Willis led the charge with three straight kills for her 12th of the match. However, WIU were able to make large runs on Saturday leaving Eagles distorted taking an 18-12 lead. The Leathernecks finished the match on a 5-1 run earning the series sweep.
 
 
Willis led the team in kills with 14 for the fifth time in Ohio Valley Conference play. Sobieralski finished with another double-double at 38 assists and 12 digs. Junior Keira Moore lead the squad in digs at 15 for her eighth straight 15+ dig performance.
 
As a team, USI finished with 46 kills, 46 assists, 53 digs, one aces, three blocks, and a .265 attacking percentage. The Leathernecks earned 46 kills, 43 assists, 47 digs, five aces, seven blocks, and a .345 hitting percentage.
 
Next up for the Eagles
USI is back on the road on Tuesday, visiting University of Tennessee at Martin.
