USI Softball blasts Lynn, rained out against Ferris

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—University of Southern Indiana Softball used a six-run fourth inning to seal an 8-0, five-inning win against Lynn University to open its third day of competition at The Spring Games Monday. The Screaming Eagles' second game against Ferris State University was canceled after half an inning of play due to rain.

Sophomore first baseman Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead over Lynn. USI tacked on another tally in the third inning on a two-out, RBI-single by junior shortstop Jordan Rager (Fishers, Indiana) to take a 2-0 lead.

Freshman outfielder Kennedy Nalley (Huntingburg, Indiana) hit a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning to put USI up, 6-0, while Fair had a two-run single three batters later to give USI an 8-0 lead.

Senior pitcher Katie Back (Indianapolis, Indiana) held the Fighting Knights off the scoreboard throughout four innings of work to pick up her third win of the year, while junior Allie Goodin (Evansville, Indiana) came on to blank Lynn in the fifth to give USI the 8-0, five-inning victory.

Back (3-1) scattered two hits and a walk throughout four innings of work to pick up the win, while Goodin allowed just one walk in her first appearance since the opening weekend—she had missed the previous three weeks due to injury.

USI (13-8) had a pair of hits in the top of the first inning against Ferris State, but could not push a run across, while the Bulldogs got a runner on base via a hit batter before the skies opened the flood gates to washout the contest.

The Eagles finish The Spring Games Tuesday with Midwest Region games against No. 7 Grand Valley State University at 9 a.m. (CST) and Ashland University at 11:15 a.m.

USI begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday at 11 a.m. (CST) when it visits No. 5 University of Indianapolis for a doubleheader.
