USI and Cedarville tie in double overtime

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer battled Cedarville University to a double-overtime 0-0 tie Wednesday evening in Cedarville, Ohio. The Screaming Eagles start the season 2-0-1, while Cedarville goes to 0-1-1 to begin 2021.
 
The Eagles and the Yellow Jackets battled through a scoreless first 45 minutes of the match with USI in command. USI had the advantage in shots, 6-3, overall and on-goal, 3-1, while Cedarville had the momentum in corner kicks, 4-0.
 
In the second half, USI's defense stopped the Cedarville momentum as the Yellow Jackets forced three corners in the last two minutes. USI continued to lead in second half shots, 10-7, in the final 45 of regulation, 8-1 on-goal.
 
The USI defense and sophomore goalkeeper Maya Etienne held firm in the two overtime periods to force the 0-0 tie. Etienne made a pair of saves in the overtimes as Cedarville outshot USI, 2-1, and had the advantage in corners, 3-0. Eagles' senior forward Katlyn Andres had USI's only shot in extra time.
 
Overall in the match, USI held a 17-12 lead in shots, 11-4 on-goal. Cedarville held a distinct advantage in corner kicks, 10-0.
 
With the 0-0 the tie, Etienne posted her second shutout of the season and the 23rd of her career at USI. The sophomore goalkeeper, who had four saves in the match, needs five shutouts to surpass USI's all-time leader Angie Gries (27.5 shutout; 1996-99).     
 
UPCOMING FOR THE EAGLES:
 
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field Sunday to open Great Lakes Valley Conference action by hosting McKendree University at 2:30 p.m. McKendree is 2-0-1 to start the year after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College this afternoon, 2-0, in Owensboro, Kentucky.
 
USI trails the all-time series with McKendree, 9-6-2, after a 1-0 regular season loss on the road and a 5-2 neutral site loss in the GLVC Tournament championship game.
