USI Volleyball rallies, but falls in five at S&T

ROLLA, Mo.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball rallied from a two-set deficit to even its Great Lakes Valley Conference match with Missouri University of Science & Technology at 2-2, but the host Miners flipped the script on the Screaming Eagles in the fifth set as they rallied from a 4-0 deficit to earn a six-point win in the deciding frame and hand USI a 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 15-9 setback Saturday afternoon.

After suffering two-point setbacks in the first two frames, USI used a 7-2 run to break a 12-12 tie in the third set. Freshman outside hitter Abby Weber (Fishers, Indiana) had seven of her career-high 21 kills in the third set as USI cut the Miners' (7-2, 1-0 GLVC) lead in half.

USI (7-3, 1-1 GLVC), which had its seven-match winning streak come to an end with the loss, reeled off five straight points to open the fourth set. Missouri S&T cut what was a six-point USI lead to just two points midway through the set, but a 4-0 run gave the Eagles breathing room en route to a five-point win.

The Eagles once again used a fast start to open the fifth frame with a 4-0 advantage, but Missouri S&T rallied to tie the score at 6-6. After a kill by Weber put the Eagles in front, 7-6, the Miners won four straight rallies to take control of the set.

USI closed to within 11-9 moments later, but the Miners won the final four rallies to secure the six-point win.

In addition to her 21 kills, Weber finished the match with a .371 attacking percentage, 11 digs and three blocks, while senior setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) was credited with 47 assists and 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri) added 10 digs, a .360 attacking percentage and five blocks, while senior middle blocker Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) added eight kills and five blocks.

Senior libero Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) led USI's back row with 21 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) added 13 digs and three aces, while sophomore right side hitter Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) added 10 digs.

USI returns to action next Saturday at 3 p.m. when it travels to Romeoville, Illinois, to take on No. 15 Lewis University in another key GLVC contest. The Eagles return to Screaming Eagles Arena September 28 when they host McKendree University.
