EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer ended its 2020-21 regular-season home schedule with a 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.
The Screaming Eagles (7-5-1, 7-5-1 GLVC) got a goal in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 halftime lead; then piled on to their lead with goals in the 70th and 81st minutes to raise their cushion to 3-0.
Missouri-St. Louis (7-4-2, 7-4-2 GLVC) found the scoreboard in the 83rd minute, but USI's defense held the Tritons without a shot for the final seven minutes of the contest to preserve the win.
Senior forward
Graham Miller (Owensboro, Kentucky) scored off a pass from sophomore forward
Zach Barton (St. Louis, Missouri) in the 28th minute to put the Eagles up, 1-0. Barton used passes from freshman defender
Mical Hardtman (Hamilton Parrish, Bermuda) and junior defender
Josef Winkler (Philpot, Kentucky) to find the back of the net in the 70th minute and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore midfielder
Brian Winkler (Philpot, Kentucky) converted a pass from freshman midfielder
Cade Walsh (St. Louis, Missouri) into a goal to put the Eagles up 3-0 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper
Justin Faas (Carmel, Indiana) picked up the win after giving up just one score and racking up five saves.
The two teams each had 16 shots, but USI outpaced the Tritons, 11-7, in shots on goal despite Missouri-St. Louis holding an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
USI finishes the regular-season Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it visits McKendree University. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 5-4-2, but lost to the Bearcats, 1-0, in the GLVC Tournament semifinals in 2019 after playing to a 1-1 tie during the regular-season.
Notes: Sunday's win marked the third straight time USI has edged Missouri-St. Louis and keeps the Eagles in the running to earn a first-round home game in the GLVC Tournament.
