EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior forward
Maggie Winter (St. Louis, Missouri) scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute of the game to lift University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer to a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over visiting Truman State University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.
Winter drew the penalty kick when she was fouled inside the box with less than six minutes to play in the contest and her goal came after the two teams had battled to a scoreless tie for more than 84 minutes. Her shot snuck by the left side of Truman State goalkeeper Beth Hopwood, who had stopped six USI shots from reaching the back of the net prior to the penalty kick. It also was her first goal of the season.
The Screaming Eagles (4-1-0, 4-1-0 GLVC) had put pressure on the Bulldogs' defense throughout the contest as it racked up 16 shots, including nine on goal.
Truman State (2-4-0, 2-4-0 GLVC), meanwhile, fired off 10 shots, including six on goal, but USI sophomore stopper
Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan) was equal to the task as she racked up six saves en route to her fourth straight shutout.
Etienne's goals-against-average on the year dropped to 0.40, while her career average fell to 0.81.
USI returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. when it visits William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
