EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer stumbled in the season opener to the University of Indianapolis, 2-1, on a soggy Sunday evening at the Goebel Soccer Complex in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles starts the season 0-1-0 while UIndy goes to 2-0-0.
UIndy struck early with a tally at 18:16 and would hold the 1-0 lead through the intermission. The first half was tight offensive with the Greyhounds leading the Eagles, 6-4 in shots.
The Eagles evened the score at 1-1 just after halftime when sophomore forward
Zach Barton stole the ball from the UIndy goalkeeper and slid the ball into the goal for his first of the season at 49:42. UIndy, however, responded with the eventual game winner 30 seconds later for a 2-1 lead at 50:08.
USI goes on the road next week with visits to Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, for a 5:30 p.m. match and the University of Illinois Springfield March 7 for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
The Eagles lead the all-time series with Lewis, 24-23-2, after posting a 1-0 victory at Strassweg Field in 2019. USI also controls the series with Illinois Springfield, 11-4-1, following a 3-0 blasting of the Prairie Stars last season.
