QUINCY, Ill.—Despite getting a 20-kill, 23-dig performance from sophomore outside hitter
Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois), University of Southern Indiana Volleyball was unable to hold onto a pair of one-set leads en a 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 15-10 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to host Quincy University Friday night at Pepsi Arena.
The Screaming Eagles (15-11, 9-6 GLVC) racked up 15 blocks on the night, but saw leads of 11-7 and 10-4 slip away in sets two and four, respectively, as the Hawks rallied for wins in each frame.
USI closed its three-point win in the first set by winning five of the final six rallies to secure a one-set lead in the match. Freshman right side hitter
Taya Dazey (Fort Wayne, Indiana) had five kills and a .556 attacking percentage to lead USI in the opening game.
After seeing Quincy (14-12, 8-7 GLVC) tie the match at a set apiece with its four-point win in the second stanza, the Eagles opened the third set with four straight points. The Hawks, however, rallied with a 14-6 run to take a 14-10 advantage; but the Eagles bounced back with six straight points to retake the lead. USI finished the third set with a 3-0 push to claim a two-point victory.
The Eagles' six-point lead in the fourth frame slipped away as Quincy used a 13-4 burst to create a 17-14 advantage. USI quickly responded by winning the next three rallies, but Quincy jumped in front for good moments later with a 3-0 run that put USI in a 22-19 hole.
Despite winning four straight points to erase a 5-1 deficit in the fifth set, the Eagles could not overcome the second of two 3-0 Quincy spurts, which gave the Hawks an 8-5 lead. Quincy put the contest out of reach moments later by winning four straight rallies to take commanding 13-7 advantage.
In addition to Anderson, the Eagles got 13 kills and 16 digs from Dazey as well as 13 kills and five blocks from senior middle hitter
Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri). Freshman outside hitter
Abby Bednar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added 12 kills, 12 digs and seven blocks, while senior middle blocker
Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) finished with seven kills and a career-high tying 10 blocks.

Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) added four kills, a .500 attacking percentage, 49 assists and 10 digs, while senior libero
Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) finished with 21 digs.
Emily Rehagen led the Hawks with a match-high 26 kills, while America Galvan had 25 digs.
USI finishes its 2021 regular-season road schedule Saturday at 3 p.m. when it visits Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. The Lions (14-10, 7-6 GLVC) suffered a four-set home loss to the University of Illinois Springfield Friday night.
