USI topped by UWF, 4-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball opened a two-game set at the University of West Florida with a 4-1 setback Tuesday evening in Pensacola, Florida. The Screaming Eagles go to 6-7 overall, while UWF finishes the evening 13-8.

USI freshman right-hander Tyler Wheeler was impressive in his first collegiate start for the Eagles despite taking the loss. Wheeler (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, in six-plus innings, on six hits and two walks. He also posted three strikeouts in the game.

The Argonauts took the lead in the first inning on a lead-off home run, increasing the lead to 2-0 in the sixth. USI cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the seventh when senior shortstop Kobe Stephens scored when sophomore third baseman Lucas McNew was hit by a pitch.

West Florida bounced back with one in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to seal the victory. The Eagles got a runner on in the ninth before the Argonauts closed out the contest.

Up Next for the Eagles:
Following the conclusion of the two-game series between the Eagles and the Argonauts Wednesday at 1 p.m., USI returns to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field for a three-game series with Drury University March 14-15. Game times this weekend are 2 p.m. for Saturday's doubleheader and noon for Sunday's single game.

The Eagles lead the all-time series with Drury, 22-10, despite the Panthers taking two-of-three last spring. The three-game slugfest saw Drury take the first two games, 21-13 and 13-6, while USI salvaged the series finale, 11-7.
