LOUISVILLE, Ky.—A nightmare start to the game was too much for University of Southern Indiana Women's Basketball to overcome Thursday as the Screaming Eagles fell to host Bellarmine University, 80-49, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Knights Hall.
USI (17-8, 13-6 GLVC) missed its first nine shots, while Bellarmine made 7-of-8 shots to begin the game; and the Eagles trailed 16-0 out of the gate.
The deficit ballooned to 27-6 at the end of the first period and 35-10 early in the second period.
Bellarmine (16-10, 11-8 GLVC) shot 73.3 percent (11-15) from the field in the opening period, including 5-of-6 (.833) from three-point range. USI, meanwhile, was just 3-of-14 (.214) from the field in the first quarter and 0-of-3 from three-point range.
USI struggled from the field in the third quarter as well as it shot just 26.7 percent (4-15) in the frame. The Knights extended their lead to as much as 33 in the third period and 34 in the fourth before settling on the 31-point win.
Freshman forward
Hannah Haithcock had 14 points to lead the Eagles, who shot just 34.0 percent (17-50) from the field. The Eagles committed 26 turnovers and were out-rebounded, 42-31.
Junior guard Breia Torrens finished with a game-high 19 points and six assists to lead the Knights, who shot 47.6 percent (.391) from the field and 39.1 percent (9-23) from three-point range.
The Eagles conclude the regular-season Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host the University of Indianapolis for Senior Day at Screaming Eagles Arena. The Greyhounds (19-8, 12-7 GLVC) held on for a 74-71 win over visiting McKendree University Thursday evening in Indianapolis.
