Euler powers USI to 13-5 win

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball sophomore leftfielder Aaron Euler (Evansville, Indiana) hit a pair of home runs to help lead the Screaming Eagles to a 13-5 victory over the University of Indianapolis Friday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI moves its record to 20-10 overall and 13-5 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 17-12, 10-8 GLVC.

The Eagles never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. USI sophomore designated hitter Bryce Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) opened the scoring by crossing the plate when junior third baseman Kobe Stephens (Dale, Indiana) reached on an error and scored the second run of the frame on a bunt single by senior first baseman Nathan Kuester (Rockport, Indiana).

After UIndy cut the USI lead in half with a tally in the second, the Eagles blew the game open with a five-run third. Euler capped off the rally with his first round-tripper of the game and his third of the season with a two-run blast to right center for the 7-1 lead.

USI pushed the lead to 8-1 in the fourth on a RBI-single by freshman catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) and to a game-high 12-1 with a four-run fifth that was highlighted by Euler's second home run of the day and his fourth of the year. Krizan also drove in a pair of runs with a two-run double in the four-tally frame.

The Greyhounds followed the Eagles four-run fifth with a four-spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning. USI's seven-run lead would remain until the seventh when they extended it to the final score of 13-5 when Kuester drove in his third RBI of the game with a single to left field.

For the game at the plate, Stephens, Kuester, and Euler led the way with three RBIs each, while Krizan and McNew had two RBIs each. Stephens, Kuester, and Euler also had three hits each.

The two-home run game by Euler was the fourth of the season by USI. McNew and junior rightfielder Manny Lopez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) join Euler with multi-home runs games with two and one, respectively, in 2019 for the Eagles.

On the mound, senior right-hander Austin Gossmann (Avon, Indiana) posted his team-best fifth win of the season. Gossmann (5-1) went five-plus innings, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out five.

USI sophomore right-hander Reece Kleinhelter (Jasper, Indiana) finished game for the Eagles with four scoreless frames, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out a career-high five batters.
