NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday, falling 7-4 to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, then 4-3 in walk-off fashion to the host Trojans.
The Screaming Eagles' (7-3) bats were paced by sophomore shortstop
Ethan Hunter (Terre Haute, Indiana) on the afternoon, going 4-for-7, with a double, a triple, and three RBI and a run scored.
Game 1: Wisconsin-Parkside (1-7) 7, USI 4
The first matchup with the Rangers on the weekend started slowly; a walk drawn by Wisconsin-Parkside's Shawn Rigsby broke a streak of 11-straight outs in the bottom of the second. Rigby later scored on the first hit of the game, one of two unearned runs scored on freshman starter
Garrett Welch (New Castle, Indiana).
Hunter supplied the runs in the three-run fourth inning, knocking a bases-clearing triple to the wall in right-center. The Eagles loaded the bases with singles by senior designated hitter
Jayden Beshears (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore left fielder
Aaron Euler (Evansville, Indiana), followed by a walk issued to freshman catcher
Lucas McNew (Floyd Knobs, Indiana).
The Rangers posted six runs between the sixth and seventh innings, abruptly changing the outlook of the game at that point. Welch was tagged with his first loss of the season after being relieved in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded.
Game 2: Trevecca Nazarene (5-5) 4, USI 3
Senior right-hander
Austin Gossmann (Avon, Indiana) took the start for the second game. Gossmann exited in the fifth having allowed just one unearned run while fanning seven Trojan batters.
USI struck first in the third inning as an Euler walk scored Hunter with the bases loaded. This was the first game Hunter batted near the top of the lineup (second), after batting in the nine spot to this point.
The Eagles struck again in the eighth after back-to-back one-run innings in the fifth and sixth frames by the Trojans. With the bases loaded, senior second baseman
Jacob Fleming (Evansville, Indiana), who entered the game as a defensive substitution in the previous inning, scored Euler from second as the Trojans botched a double-play attempt.
The Trojans were able to steal the victory from USI despite McNew scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth. Trevecca walked off on a John O'Dwyer sacrifice fly after tying the game on a Dalton Mauldin RBI single. Junior lefty
Paul Perez (Puerto l Cruz, Venezuela) was charged with the loss.
