USI Splits on Final Day of Midwest Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS - The Midwest Region Crossover came to a close on Saturday with University of Southern Indiana Volleyball (10-13, 2-10 GLVC) splitting its two matches for a 2-1 record in the tournament overall.

The Screaming Eagles fell to Northern Michigan University in four sets (23-25, 25-20, 14-25, 17-25) in the morning session but took the afternoon match from Kentucky Wesleyan College in four sets (25-21, 27-25, 13-25, 25-21).

Junior middle blocker Amanda Jung (Belleville, Illinois) led USI with 22 kills over the two matches, sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Yochum (Columbia, Illinois) added 21 kills and a double-double.

Northern Michigan 3, Southern Indiana 1

NMU 25, USI 23
 
  • The Eagles opened with a 10-4 lead, maintained to 23-19, but let up a 6-0 Wildcat run that included three USI attack errors to end the first frame
  • Jung led the opening set with four kills, followed by Alyssa Yochum with three
  • The Eagles posted 10 kills on 22 attempts before committing their first attack error, but ended the set with seven against 12 kills
  • Sophomore setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) posted five of USI's ten assists, between four players, and tied senior libero Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) with three digs

USI 25, NMU 20
 
  • The Eagles took the final lead change at 20-19, put together runs of 6-0, 5-1 and 7-1 in the frame on their way to the lone USI set-victory in the morning session...
  • Jung again lead USI with three kills, but was supplemented by three other Eagles with two each
  • Similar to the first frame, four Eagles recorded an assist for 11 total...Senior setter Erika Peoples (Bloomington, Illinois) led with four and sat tied at seven with Cepicky through two...Peoples also posted both of her service aces in the second
  • Freshman middle hitter Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri) posted three blocks, two combined with Yochum, one with Jung

NMU 25, USI 14
 
  • The Wildcats opened on an 8-0 run and pulled momentum back their way for the remainder of the match...USI pulled within three points midway through the set
  • The Eagles had nine kills as a team, three each for Yochum, Jung and junior right side hitter Elexis Coleman (Joliet, Illinois)...The three tallied their kills in respective order: Yochum took USI's first three, followed by Jung, then Coleman
  • Cepicky completed her ninth double-double of the season with four digs...Peoples and Cepicky split the nine assists 5-4
  • The Wildcats rode Autumn Monsma's eight kills for the third-set victory and posted a .469 hitting percentage as a team

NMU 25, USI 17
 
  • Monsma tallied 10 kills to power the Wildcats in the final frame, including four in the match-clinching 7-2 run
  • Junior outside hitter Lindsey Stose (Elkhart, Indiana) tallied three of USI's six kills, set up twice by Peoples, once by Cepicky

USI 25, KWC 21
 
  • The Eagles put together an 8-2 run to take the opening set over the Panthers...KWC held a 15-11 lead at one point in the frame
  • Yochum tallied four kills to lead the frame, freshman middle blocker Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) posted three kills, all in the set-clinching run, and added a solo block
  • Peoples assisted on nine of USI's 12 kills, including all three of Hegg's and three of Yochum's four
  • Junior defensive specialist Lizzy Gardner (Lafayette, Indiana) registered seven digs, followed by Limper with six

USI 27, KWC 25
 
  • USI fell behind early, trailing by as many as five points during the set, but took a 19-18 lead and held on for the second-set victory
  • Hegg continued her momentum from the first to post four more kills in the second frame and added two more blocks
  • Peoples stepped into full setting duties, posted 15 assists on 16 USI kills
  • Limper brought in eight of the Eagles' 22 digs

KWC 25, USI 13
 
  • The Eagles let up a 10-3 run to give the Panthers the third set...KWC never lost the lead in the frame
  • Yochum clinched her third double-double of the season with four kills to go with 10 digs
  • The Panthers posted an absurd .696 hitting percentage to get by the Eagles...KWC did not have another set with a percentage higher than .188

USI 25, KWC 21
 
  • USI put together runs of 9-0 and 7-1 en route to the match-clinching fourth-set
  • Jung racked up six kills in USI's final set of the day...Three other Eagles posted three kills: Litteken, Stose and Yochum
  • Limper collected nine digs, two more than USI had as a team in the previous set...Yochum added eight digs

  • The Eagles improve their record in the all-time series with KWC to 48-1
  • Casey Cepicky and Alyssa Yochum each notched a double-double on Saturday, their ninth and third of the season, respectively
  • Erika Peoples' 46 assists against KWC tied her fifth-highest in a match in her career and sets a new season high
  • USI's loss to NMU is the first for the Eagles in the context of the Midwest Region Crossover
