USI finishes homestand Thursday, hits the road Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men's Basketball concludes its three-game homestand Thursday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Physical Activities Center. Following Thursday's home contest, USI hits the road to visit McKendree University Saturday at 3 p.m. in Lebanon, Illinois.

USI Men's Basketball Week 10 Notes:
 
USI receives votes for national poll. USI received votes for the D2SIDA Media Poll this week. The Screaming Eagles received votes two-straight weeks in December, but has not appeared in the D2SIDA Media Poll or the NABC Top 25 Poll this year.

Eagles sweep GLVC weekend. USI posted a 2-0 GLVC weekend with a 98-78 victory over Missouri University of Science & Technology and an 85-76 thriller over Truman State University. Freshman forward Emmanuel Little recorded the Eagles' first 20-20 game since 2014 in helping lead USI to a 98-78 victory over Missouri S&T. Little scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed a season-best 21 rebounds to become the first 20-20 Eagle since Aaron Nelson had a 24 point, 23 rebound night versus Missouri S&T January 9, 2014.

USI had to battle back from a 13-point second half deficit to defeat Truman State. Junior guard/forward Nate Hansen posted a season-high 23 points to lead the Eagles comeback win over the Bulldogs, while tying season-bests with eight rebounds and two steals. 

Watson needs two this week for 200 wins. USI Head Coach Rodney Watson has 198 victories and is two wins away from becoming the third Eagles head coach to reach the 200-win plateau. Bruce Pearl is USI's all-time leader in wins with 231.

USI Leaders. USI has three players averaging double-digits in 2017-18. Junior guard Alex Stein leads the scorers with 18.6 points per game, while junior guard/forward Nate Hansen and senior guard Marcellous Washington round out the double-digit scorers with 15.5 and 12.1 points per contest, respectively. Freshman forward Emmanuel Little takes over the team lead on the glass with 7.5 rebounds per outing, 8.9 per contest in GLVC action. Senior forward DayJar Dickson second with 7.4 rebounds per contest, 8.3 per league game.

Washington and Stein among GLVC, NCAA leaders. Senior guard Marcellous Washington leads the GLVC and ranks 15th nationally in steals (41, 2.1 per game) and 23rd nationally for assist-turnover ratio (2.89). Junior guard Alex Stein is first in the league and second nationally in free throw percentage (95.1; 98-103) and 23rd nationally in free throws made (98). Stein also is second in the GLVC and 18th nationally in minutes played.  

First 10, Last 10 Games for USI. A number of Eagles have stepped their game in the last 10 games, compared to the first 10 of this season. USI was 8-2, as a team, in the first 10 games and 7-3 in the last 10.
  • Junior guard Alex Stein is averaging 19.1 points per game and shooting 48.5 percent (65-134) from the field, compared to the first 10 games when he averaged 18.1 points and shot 47.1 percent (57-121).
  • Freshman forward Emmanuel Little is posting 9.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in the last 10 outings, compared to 8.1 points and 6.6 rebounds in his first 10 games. 
  • Junior guard/forward Nate Hansen is putting up 16.0 points per game over the last 10 games, compared to 14.9 points per appearance in the opening 10 contests.
  • Senior forward DayJar Dickson is doing the job in the scoring column and the glass in the last 10, averaging 9.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. In the first 10 games, he posted 6.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. He also is shooting 67.3 percent (37-55) in the second third of the season, compared to 59.5 percent  in the first third of the year.

USI at home versus away from the PAC. At the PAC in 2017-18, USI is 11-0 overall; averaging 88.3 points and allowing 70.0 points per contest; and outrebounding the opposition 44.7-29.7 boards per contest. Junior guard Alex Stein leads four players in double-digits with 20.5 points per contest, followed by junior guard/forward Nate Hansen with 16.7 points per outing. Away from the surroundings of the PAC, USI is 4-5; being outscored 72.9-72.7; and outrebounding their hosts, 35.9-33.0. Junior guard Alex Stein leads three players in double-digits with 16.3 points per contest, followed by junior guard/forward Nate Hansen with 13.3 points per outing. Senior guard Marcellous Washington is the only Eagle on the team that scores more on the road (12.6 points per game), compared to at home (11.6 points per contest).

USI in GLVC action. The Eagles concludes the three-game homestand Thursday when the University of Wisconsin-Parkside visits on January 25 before going on the road to visit McKendree University January 27.
  • USI vs. UW-Parkside. USI is 29-12 all-time against UW-Parkside after defeating the Rangers last year, 76-72, at the PAC. Guard Jeril Taylor led the Eagles with 25 points, while junior guard Alex Stein followed with 23 points to lead USI players. USI also is 27-8 against UW-Parkside in GLVC play and 17-4 in the PAC.
  • USI at  McKendree. USI is 9-7 all-time against McKendree after sweeping a pair of games with the Bearcats last year (104-58 win at McKendree; 81-67 win at the PAC). Senior guard Marcellous Washington led six Eagles in double-digits with 20 points in the win at McKendree, while junior guard Alex Stein posted 27 points to lead four Eagles in double-figures during the win at the PAC. USI also is 7-1 against McKendree in GLVC play and 5-0 at the PAC. 

UW-Parkside in 2017-18. The Rangers are in their final season in the GLVC before making the move to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next season. UW-Parkside is 6-11 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC and have won four of its last five games, including a home win over Bellarmine University last Thursday. The Rangers have split their two games at home this week, falling to Lewis University, 66-58, and defeating William Jewell College, 80-66.

McKendree in 2017-18. The Bearcats, who will host William Jewell College on Thursday before hosting USI, is 11-7 overall and 2-6 in GLVC action. McKendree enters the week having lost five of the last six games after the starting the year by winning nine of 11 games.
