EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior guard
Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) scored 25 points and moved into seventh place all-time in leading the Screaming Eagles to an 87-65 victory over the University of Indianapolis Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which completes the regular season sweep of the Greyhounds, saw its record rise to13-4 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 9-5, 3-3 GLVC.
Stein, who also had a game-high six assists, posted his 64
th double-digit scoring game, the 18
th of 20-or-more points, on 11-of-20 from the field, one field goal from beyond the arc, and two-of-two from the line. He also moved into number seven all-time in scoring with 1,278 career points, passing former USI All-American Diond're Givens and Ernie Brothers.
The Eagles took command of the game during the first half, using runs of 14-3 and 16-4 to lead 41-21 at the intermission. USI led by as many as 22 points, 41-19, following the 12 points by Stein and the 11 points of junior guard/forward
Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana).
As a team, the Eagles were hot from the field, shooting 57.6 percent (19-33) and outrebounded the Greyhounds, 23-15.
In the second half, USI continued to dominate and extended the lead to 28 points, 60-32, with 12:19 on a pair of free throws by freshman forward
Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana). The Greyhounds would rally to cut the Eagles advantage to 17 points three times before USI settled for the 87-65 victory.
Following Stein in the scoring column was Hansen with 16 points, while senior forward
Julius Rajala (Helsinki, Finland) finished the win with 14 points. Senior forward
DayJar Dickson (Washington, D.C.), who has 41 rebounds in the last three games (13.7 per game), and Rajala were a one-two punch on the glass with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
As a team, USI finished the contest shooting 55.7 percent from the field (34-61), 76.5 percent from the line (13-17), and controlled the glass, 44-34.
The Eagles are idle through the weekend before heading back out on the road to visit GLVC East rivial and top-ranked Bellarmine University Monday at 7 p.m. (CST) in Louisville, Kentucky. The Knights, who moved into the number one slot of the D2SIDA Top 25 on Tuesday, saw its record go to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the GLVC after a 66-54 victory over Lewis University this evening in Romeoville, Illinois. Bellarmine also is slated to play the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in Somers, Wisconsin, prior to hosting USI.
USI is 50-40 all-time against Bellarmine after losing a pair to the Knights last year (78-70 at the PAC; 67-61 in Louisville, Kentucky). Guard Jeril Taylor led the Eagles with 17 points in the loss at the PAC, while Stein and guard Bobo Drummond paced the Eagles with 20 points and 18 points, respectively, in the loss at Bellarmine. The Eagles have lost three-straight to the Knights and six of the last seven meetings over the last two years after winning six-of-eight between February 2012 and March 2014.
The Knights, who were predicted to win the GLVC East Division, have won 51-straight home games, dating back to the third home game of the 2014-15 regular season. USI is the last conference team to win a GLVC regular season game at Knights Hall, defeating Bellarmine, 68-66, in overtime during the 2013-14 campaign. USI center Aaron Nelson led the way for the Eagles in that victory with a double-double (15 points, 19 rebounds).
