ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a hard fought battle with Lewis University, 2-1, Friday evening in Romeoville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles fall to 3-5-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the GLVC, while Lewis sees its record go to 6-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the league.
USI fell behind early, spotting Lewis a goal at the 2:02 mark. The Flyers would hold onto the 1-0 lead through the end of halftime.
The Eagles would fight back and got even, 1-1, at 63:04 with a goal off the foot of sophomore defender
Drew Albert (Eureka, Missouri) at 63:04. Albert recorded his first goal of the season when he booted a 50-yard free kick over the goalkeeper and bounced the ball into the goal.
Lewis would respond 18 minutes later when it scored the eventual game-winner at 81:29. USI would get three more shots at Lewis' goal, but the Flyers' defense withstood the flurry to give the Eagles their fifth loss of the season.
Overall, the Eagles had the momentum throughout the match, outshooting the Flyers, 19-8, but could only get through the Lewis back-line once.
USI concludes the two-match road trip Sunday when it visits the University of Illinois Springfield. The match is slated for a special
noon kickoff for the match.
Illinois Springfield saw its record go to 5-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league after defeating McKendree University, 2-0, at home tonight in Springfield, Illinois. The Eagles hold an 8-4-1 all-time series lead over the Prairie Stars after posting a 3-1 victory last year at Strassweg Field. USI also has won eight of the last 10 match-ups.
The next homestand for the Eagles is in two weeks when they host Quincy University October 6 and Truman State University October 7 at Strassweg Field.
