Eagles splits with Stars on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished the four-game series versus the University of Illinois Springfield with a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. USI watched its record go to 12-3 overall and 5-3 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield goes to 15-12, 5-3 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to win the opener, 5-2. USI fell behind 2-0 after three innings before tying the game with two runs in the fifth and taking the lead for good with a three-run frame in the top of the sixth to take game one.
 
Eagles' senior right-hander Lucas Barnett (Sellersburg, Indiana) led the way for USI in getting the win on the mound. Barnett (3-0) pitched six strong innings, allowing two unearned runs, while striking out a season-high eight batters.
 
USI senior right-hander Justin Watts (Bryan, Ohio) closed out the game with a perfect frame in earning his fourth save of the season. Watts set down three of four batters, striking out one and allowing a hit.
 
In the nightcap, USI overcame a 3-0 deficit, but lost in the bottom of the 10th, 4-3, to finish the day with a split. The Prairie Star had the early 3-0 lead with one in the first and two in the fourth before the Eagles knotted up the score, 3-3, with a three-run sixth inning to set the stage for the extra frame.
 
USI senior right-hander Mike Ringer (Springfield, Illinois) took the loss in relief for the Eagles. Ringer (1-1) allowed the 10th inning run on a home run after working 1.2 innings.
 
Sophomore right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) got the no decision in the start. Krizan allowed the first three runs, one earned, on seven hits, while striking out four in eight innings on the bump.
 
At the plate in the nightcap, senior designated hitter Jaylen Quarles (Indianapolis, Indiana) tied a career-high with three hits in the loss. Junior second baseman Joe Redburn (Newburgh, Indiana) followed Quarles at the dish, knocking in two of the Eagles' runs in game two.
 
USI continues its five-game road swing with the annual "Battle at the Braun" when it visits the University of Evansville Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field to host a four-game series with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside April 8-9.
