SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—University of Southern Indiana Softball beat the rain to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from host Drury University Friday afternoon. The No. 14 Screaming Eagles won the first game, 4-0, before earning a 5-2 win in a rain-shortened game two.
USI (23-5, 4-2 GLVC) returns to action Sunday at noon when it takes on Missouri University of Science & Technology in a GLVC doubleheader in Rolla, Missouri.
Southern Indiana (23-5, 4-2 GLVC): 4, at Drury (14-15, 2-4 GLVC): 0
Sophomore second baseman
Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) had a two-run triple in the top of the second inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead, while senior catcher
Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) drove in her 150th career run with an RBI-single in the sixth inning to put USI up, 3-0.
Johnson's RBI-single in the seventh gave freshman pitcher
Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) more than enough ammunition to work with to earn her 12th win of the year.
Leonhardt (12-1) scattered three hits and a walk throughout seven innings to record her ninth straight decision. She fanned eight batters as she earned her third complete-game shutout in as many starts in GLVC play.
Southern Indiana: 5, Drury: 2 (5 inn.)
Junior designated player
Alex Logan (Carleton, Michigan) went 3-for-3 with an RBI as USI beat the rain for a 5-2, five-inning win in the nightcap.
Logan's hit in the top of the second inning helped set up the Eagles' first tally as junior third baseman
Mena Fulton (Bloomington, Indiana) later scored on a wild pitch.
Johnson earned her fourth RBI of the day as she drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth frame to extend the Eagles' advantage to 2-0.
Drury (14-15, 2-4 GLVC) took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fourth inning to push a run across and cut USI's lead in half, but a three-run fifth inning gave the Eagles a commanding 5-1 advantage.
Logan and freshman outfielder
Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) each had RBIs in the inning that gave USI an insurmountable lead. Schubert went 1-for-2 and now has an RBI with each of her first two collegiate hits after a home run Wednesday represented her first hit.
Sophomore pitcher
Courtney Atkisson (Bringhurst, Indiana) earned the win after giving up two runs, one earned, in four-plus innings of work. Atkisson (8-3) gave way to Leonhardt in the fifth inning after getting into a jam. Leonhardt earned her first collegiate save after getting the Eagles out of the frame without giving up run.
USI added two more runs in the sixth inning as Fulton and junior first baseman
Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana) each had RBIs. However, since the game was called in the sixth inning, Fulton and Fossett's RBIs were nullified.
