QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened a three-game series at Quincy University with a 6-2 victory Friday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles see their record go to 5-8 overall, while Quincy goes to 9-7 in 2017.
USI drew first blood in the second inning when junior shortstop
Angel Torres (Puerto Rico) started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles their first lead of the day, 1-0. Quincy grabbed its only lead of the game, 2-1, when the Hawks plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
Torres, who finished the game two-for-three with a run scored and two RBIs, evened the score, 2-2, in the top of the sixth when he singled in junior rightfielder
Nick Gobert (Jasper, Indiana) with USI's second game. The Eagles took the lead for good in the seventh when Gobert lined a two-run triple down the left field line for the 4-2 advantage.
Freshman centerfielder
Spenser Deom (Tell City, Indiana) and junior designated hitter
Joe Redburn (Newburgh, Indiana) padded the USI lead with RBIs in the top of the eighth. Deom singled in the fifth run with a drive to right, while Redburn doubled to right for the sixth tally in back-to-back at-bats.
Eagles' senior right-hander
Colin Nowak (Carol Stream, Illinois) made the six runs stand up and earned his second win of the year. Nowak (2-2) allowed two runs on eight hits and a pair of walks, while striking a season-high seven Hawks.
USI and Quincy continue the three-game series Saturday at noon before the finale on Sunday at noon. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field March 22 when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a non-conference match-up.
