Eagles finish 2017 with win over Ohio Valley

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team wrapped up the Bill Joergens Memorial Classic and 2017 with a 95-69 victory over Ohio Valley University Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI watched its record rise to11-3 overall, while Ohio Valley goes to 1-8 in 2017-18 campaign.
 
The Screaming Eagles flew out of the gate to start the game, building a seven-point lead, 16-9, before seven minutes were gone in the game. The Fighting Scots responded with short spurts, tying the game at 22-22 and went on to hold a 39-38 lead at the intermission.
 
USI had a pair of players double-digits during the first 20 minutes with junior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) and senior guard Marcellous Washington (Lexington, Kentucky) dropping in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
After Ohio Valley got a quick bucket to start the second half, it was all Screaming Eagles the rest of the way. USI took control with a 12-2 run to lead 50-43 and never looked back, extending the lead to as many as 27 points twice before settling for the 95-69 victory.
 
The USI offense was led by Stein, who finished the game with a game-high 24 points. The junior guard was nine-of-14 from the field, two-of-four from long range, and a perfect four-of-four from the line to extend his streak to 49-straight from the stripe.
 
Washington followed Stein in the scoring column for the game with 17 points on a blistering seven-of-10 from the field, two-of-five from beyond the arc, and one-of-one from the line. The senior guard also had a game-high nine assists and was tied for a game-high with five steals.
 
Junior guard/forward Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana) and senior forward DayJar Dickson (Washington, D.C.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 16 points and 10 points, respectively. Hanson tied with Washington with a game-high five steals.
 
The Eagles start 2018 and re-start the Great Lakes Valley Conference when by hosting the University of Missouri-St. Louis at the PAC Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Tritons, who began GLVC play with a 2-1 mark in December, entered today's action at home versus Lindenwood University with a 7-4 overall record.
 
USI leads the all-time series with UMSL, 36-11, 30-2 in conference play. The Eagles also has a 20-4 all-time mark against the Tritons at home, 18-1 in league action. Guards Jeril Taylor and Cortez Macklin led the Eagles to a 71-58 victory last year with 18 and 14 points, respectively.
