Eagles celebrate Senior Day with 3-1 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 3-1 victory over Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI goes to 8-4-4 overall and 6-3-4 in GLVC play, while Missouri S&T ends the match 1-13-1 overall, 1-11-1 in the league.

With the victory, USI kept pace with Bellarmine University and in a tie for fourth place in the GLVC standings. The Screaming Eagles can clinch a fourth place and a GLVC Tournament first round home game with a win or a tie versus McKendree University Wednesday night and a Knights' loss at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. If USI and Bellarmine finish the season tied, the fourth and final home game would be determined by the tie-breaker of how the teams did against the rest of the GLVC in order of finish.

The GLVC Tournament, which is comprised of the top eight teams in the standings, is slated to start October 29.

The Eagles got onto the scoreboard 21 minutes into the match when freshman forward Taylor McCormick (Rapid City, South Dakota) converted a corner kick for the 1-0 lead. McCormick was assisted on her fourth tally of the season by freshman forward Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Missouri).

The 1-0 USI advantage held through the intermission with the Eagles outshooting Missouri S&T, 10-0.

In the second half, the Eagles increase the margin to 2-0 when junior midfielder Olivia Wilde (Racine, Wisconsin) converted a penalty kick 40 seconds into the second stanza. The goal was Wilde's second of the game

After Missouri S&T cut the USI lead to 2-1 at 69:34 on an own goal, freshman defender Madelyne Juenger (Columbia, Illinois) blasted in her fifth goal of the season to give the Eagles the eventual 3-1 victory. The fifth tallies of the season put Juenger into the team lead in goals scored this season.

The Eagles conclude the 2017 regular season and the homestand Wednesday when they hosts McKendree University for a 5 p.m. showdown. The Bearcats saw their record go to 11-2-3 overall, 8-2-3 GLVC, after lost 1-0 to Maryville University this afternoon.

USI trails the all-time series with McKendree, 7-5-1, after falling to the Bearcats last season, 3-2, on the road. The Bearcats have won the last three versus the Eagles.
