USI Volleyball earns fourth straight win

AURORA, Ill.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball sophomore outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) slammed down 19 kills, including eight in the match-clinching fourth set, as the Screaming Eagles earned a 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24 victory over Ashland University in their second match of the Midwest Region Crossover.

Sophomore middle hitter Elexis Coleman (Joliet, Illinois) and sophomore right side hitter Amanda Jung (Belleville, Illinois) added 12 kills apiece as USI earned its fourth straight win.

USI (7-13) also got eight kills and a .538 attacking percentage from senior middle hitter Te'Ayla Whitfield (Fort Wayne, Indiana) as well as 48 assists, five digs and three blocks from freshman setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri). Senior libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) had 23 digs to lead USI's back row.

The Screaming Eagles take on Ohio Valley University at 4 p.m. Saturday to conclude the Midwest Region Crossover. Ashland slips to 11-8 with the loss.

Set 1
USI, which led 10-5 early in the opener, scored four of the final five points to overcome a late one-point deficit and edge Ashland in the first set. Coleman and Jung each had four kills to aid the Screaming Eagles.

Set 2
Ashland used a 6-1 run to break open a back-and-forth second set. USI closed the gap to 22-20 late, but Ashland's .345 attacking percentage in the second frame was too much for the Screaming Eagles to overcome. Humphrey had four kills to lead USI in the second stanza.

Set 3
USI used a 9-3 run midway through the third set to swing momentum into its favor. A 3-0 spurt later in the frame sealed the six-point win for the Screaming Eagles, who received four kills apiece from Humphrey and Coleman.

Set 4
Monumental shifts in momentum highlighted the fourth set. Ashland used a 10-1 run early in the frame to overcome an 8-4 USI lead. The Screaming Eagles rallied from a 17-11 deficit to overtake Ashland late in the set. Humphrey had eight kills to pace USI in the match-clinching victory.
