Eagles salvage a split to end regular season

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The 26th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The Greyhounds took the opener, 12-2, while the Screaming Eagles picked up the win in game two, 8-4.

USI sees its record go to 33-17 overall and 20-8 in the GLVC, while UIndy finishes the regular season, 32-18 overall, 17-11 GLVC. The Eagles, who have won nine of their last 10 games after having an eight-game winning streak snapped in the opener, will be the number seed from the GLVC East Division in the GLVC Tournament, which is slated for May 12-15 at Grand Park.

The GLVC Tournament pairing will be announced Sunday evening after the rest of the conference schedule is completed tomorrow.

In the nightcap, sophomore second baseman Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) hit a grand slam in the fifth and senior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) knocked a two-run blast in the sixth to lead the Eagles to an 8-4 win. The Eagles also got a two-run double from senior catcher Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) in the seventh to complete the scoring.

On the mound, freshman left-hander Chase Partain (Evansville, Indiana) picked his second win in his second start. Partain (2-0) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.

Senior right-hander T.J. Decker (Brazil, Indiana) posted his team-best sixth save of the year by throwing the final 3.1 innings. Decker allowed a hit and struck out two to get the save.

The Eagles could not get on track in the opener as the Greyhounds raced to a 12-2 win. UIndy scored seven times in the first two innings and sealed the victory with a five-run fourth. USI got on the scoreboard with a tally in third and one in fifth on a RBI-single by senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and a RBI-walk by senior shortstop Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana).

USI freshman right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) lost for the first time in 2016. Krizan (4-1) allowed nine runs, six earned, on nine walk. Senior right-hander Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up the final three runs on two hits and a walk.
