INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team saw its season come to an end as No. 1 University of Indianapolis dealt the Screaming Eagles an 11-3 loss in six innings in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region #1 Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Indianapolis (51-4) took advantage of two straight walks to open the bottom of the first inning, as the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs on a single up the middle to move ahead 2-0.
The Eagles threatened in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally that loaded the bases, but USI was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
UIndy broke open the contest in the bottom of the fifth with five-straight RBI singles that pushed the Greyhounds ahead 7-0. USI rallied in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs of their own to cut the Indianapolis lead to 7-3.
The hosts would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning by loading the bases with just one out. Greyhounds' freshman Marisa Brown ended the contest with a grand slam home run to center field and provide Indianapolis with the run-rule advantage, 11-3.
USI ends its season with a 35-21 overall record in one of the best offensive seasons in Eagles' softball history. The Eagles broke single-season team records in runs scored (308), doubles (92), home runs (53), RBIs (275), and double plays (28).
Along with multiple team records, junior catcher
Haley Hodges broke individual USI single-season records for runs scored, home runs, RBIs, and walks. The Portage, Indiana native also set a new NCAA DII record for consecutive walks with nine earlier in the season.
The Eagles' back-to-back NCAA II Tournament appearances marks the first time in program history that USI has made two-straight appearances.
