EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team and Lewis University traded shutouts in a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles took the opener, 4-0, while the Flyers took the nightcap, 1-0.
USI saw its record go to 24-15 overall and 12-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis finished the day 21-16 overall, 10-8 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles scored twice in the fourth, aided by a Lewis error, and twice in the seventh in posting a 4-0 game one victory. Sophomore leftfielder
Drake McNamara (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) scored USI's first run and the eventual game-winner on an error after a single by sophomore second baseman
Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana).
USI junior right-hander
Colin Nowak (Carol Stream, Illinois) made the most of the four runs in ringing up his fourth win of the year. Nowak (4-2) scattered five hits and a walk, while striking out five in six innings of work.
The final three innings on the mound for USI went to senior right-hander
T.J. Decker (Brazil, Indiana). Decker record his second save of the year after going three innings, allowing two hits and striking out four batters.
In the nightcap, the Eagles could not get the offense going in losing Saturday's second game, 1-0. USI mustered only three hits in the seven inning game and left the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh.
USI junior right-hander
Lucas Barnett (Sellersburg, Indiana) was the tough-luck loser in the nightcap, giving up the game-winner in the sixth on a wild pitch. Barnett (4-4) allowed one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out six in seven innings.
The Eagles and the Flyers conclude the series with a noon doubleheader Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. Live coverage of Sunday's doubleheader can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.
