Home run derby powers Eagles to doubleheader sweep

QUINCY, Ill.---On a day where junior catcher Haley Hodges broke another USI record, the University of Southern Indiana softball team swept Quincy University in a road doubleheader in Quincy, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles stormed to a 10-2 rout in the first contest before grabbing the sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two.

USI rises to 32-14 overall and 20-6 in the GLVC, while Quincy falls to 13-25 overall and 8-18 in the conference.

In game one, USI opened the contest with an offensive outburst. The Eagles struck first in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by junior Lexi Reese, her eighth of the season.

Quincy returned the favor in the bottom of the first with a solo home run of their own and a run scored via a wild pitch, as the Hawks took a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles responded in the third on a two-run jack to right center field by senior Janna Green, just the second of her career, to push USI back in front 3-2.

Junior Haley Hodges made history in the fourth inning, as the catcher smashed a solo home run to left field for her 17th of the season, a new USI single-season record.

Leading 4-2 in the sixth, sophomore Marleah Fossett smacked the team's fourth home run of the day to center field, scoring Hodges and pushing USI's advantage to 6-2.

Hodges was not done, as the junior cracked a towering grand slam to center field to increase the Eagles' lead to 10-2.

The five home runs in the first contest ties a USI team record for homers in a game, which was originally set this season against William Jewell College.

Leading USI was Haley Hodges, who finished two-for-three with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs. Senior Janna Green went three-for-four with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored in the Eagles' victory.

Freshman pitcher Haylee Smith earned her twelfth win in the circle, allowing just four hits, one earned run, and striking out five in a complete seven innings.

In the second contest, USI opened up an early lead. The Eagles tallied their first run in the top of the third inning, as Haley Hodges continued to terrorize the Hawks with an RBI double to open the scoring.

Quincy scored a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly to even the score.

USI struck for another run in the fourth, as the seniors, Toni Braun and Janna Green, each singled and drove in a run to regain the advantage for USI at 3-1.

In the top of the fifth, Hodges smashed her third home run of the afternoon, a lead-off shot to left center field.

USI tacked on to its advantage in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by freshman Claire Johnson that pushed USI ahead 6-1. Sophomore Mena Fulton launched a three-run home run to give the Eagles their final lead of 9-1.

Hodges led the Eagles, once again, going two-for-three with a home run, a double, two RBIs, two runs, and a walk in game two. Mena Fulton helped power the Eagles' offensive onslaught with a two-for-four second game with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Senior Sarah Owens earned the victory in the circle with a gem of a performance, allowing a single run on two hits, while striking out two in six innings of work. Freshman Courtney Atkisson came in to close out the contest and pitched a single perfect inning.

USI returns to action on Tuesday at USI Softball Field as the Eagles host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a non-conference doubleheader at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
