CLERMONT, Fla.--- The University of Southern Indiana softball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking extra-inning losses on the fourth day of The Spring Games, as the Screaming Eagles dropped the first contest, 3-2 in ten innings, to Grand Valley State University and a 4-3 loss to Saginaw Valley State University in eight innings to end the afternoon.
In the day's opening game, USI was able to keep pace with GVSU, but could not produce offensively when the Eagles needed to.
The Lakers struck first in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. USI matched GVSU with an RBI double by sophomore
Olivia Clark-Kittleson that scored fellow sophomore
Marleah Fossett.
The Eagles would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Fossett that brought in freshman
Lindsey Barr.
Grand Valley State wasted little time responding, as the Lakers tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. As the game crept into extra innings, neither USI nor GVSU could sustain the offense to produce a run.
USI's best scoring chance came in the ninth inning as it had runners at second and third with no outs. The Lakers, however, retired three straight batters to get out of the jam and preserve the 2-2 tie.
The extra-inning journey ended in the last half of the 10th frame as the Lakers produced a one-out, RBI-single to grab the 3-2 victory.
In game two, USI was able to get the offense flowing, but the Eagles could not hold on to a late lead.
The Cardinals scored the first tally of the contest on a solo shot to left center field to put SVSU up 1-0 after four innings.
USI responded in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to grab a 3-1 lead over the Cardinals. Sophomore
Marleah Fossett continued to show her prowess for driving in runs with a run-scoring single up the middle that scored junior
Haley Hodges. Freshman
Lindsey Barr had a pinch-hit double to drive in two more runs.
SVSU charged back in the top of the seventh inning with two runs to tie the score and send the contest into extra innings. The Cardinals took advantage of the international tie-breaker rule to plate the go-ahead tally in the top of the eighth; then set the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory.
In the circle, freshman Halyee Smith was charged with both losses despite not surrendering an earned run on the day. She allowed three unearned runs in 10 innings of work in the loss to Grand Valley State; then spelled senior
Sarah Owens in the seventh inning before surrendering an unearned tally in the eighth frame.
The Screaming Eagles fall to 11-7 on the season and wrap up play at The Spring Games Wednesday. USI opens the day with a 2 p.m. (CDT) contest against Minnesota State University-Mankato before facing Holy Family University at 4 p.m. (CDT).
