CLEARWATER, Fla.--- The University of Southern Indiana softball team could not keep the momentum rolling into the second day of The Spring Games, as the Screaming Eagles dropped the first contest, 5-0, to 15
th-ranked California University-Pennsylvania and a 6-3 loss to 22
nd-ranked West Chester University to close the day.
In the day's opening game, USI struggled to produce offensively and could not keep pace with the Vulcans in a 5-0 loss for the Eagles.
California-Pa. got on the board early in the second and third innings with two home runs that earned the Vulcans a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles kept the Vulcans from increasing their lead in the fourth, but were unable to contain California-Pa. in the fifth, as the Vulcans hammered out three runs to take a 5-0 advantage.
With three innings to look to cut into the Vulcans' lead, California-Pa. held the Eagles' hitless in the 5-0 victory.
In the loss, USI recorded just two hits, putting just three runners on base. Recording the lone hits were seniors
Toni Braun and
Janna Green.
In the circle, senior
Sarah Owens pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Freshman
Courtney Atkisson came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, while giving up just two hits.
In game two, USI was able to get the offense flowing, but the Eagles rally came up just short in a 6-3 loss to #22 West Chester.
The Eagles and Golden Rams each recorded a single in the first inning without causing much damage. In the bottom of the second, West Chester struck with three hits, pounding out three runs to jump ahead 3-0.
The Golden Rams continued to increase their advantage in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, adding a run in each frame to hold a 6-0 lead over USI. After five full innings, the Eagles had recorded just two hits in the game.
USI would not go quietly, as the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of singles by junior
Lexi Reese and freshman
Lindsey Barr that helped narrow the West Chester lead to 6-2.
The Eagles would add one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI ground out by senior
Toni Braun, but the USI rally fell just short in the loss.
In the Eagles' six hit performance against West Chester, USI was led by freshman
Caitlyn Bradley, who finished two-for-four with a run scored, while freshmen
Claire Johnson and
Lindsey Barr, junior
Lexi Reese, and senior
Janna Green all recorded one hit.

Haylee Smith started in the circle for USI, pitching four innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits, while senior
Sarah Owens entered in relief, hurling two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The Screaming Eagles fall to 9-5 on the season with a pair of regional contests against Ohio Dominican University at noon before taking on Walsh University at 2 p.m.
