KANSAS CITY, Mo.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles sneaked by with a 2-1 win in the opening contest, before grabbing the sweep with a 5-0 triumph in the second game.

USI rises to 18-8 overall and 6-0 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst falls to 8-16 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Freshman pitcher
Haylee Smith dominated in the circle early in the contest, allowing just one hit through the first four innings. Rockhurst would strike first in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a run on a single down the right field line.

USI responded in the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single by junior
Grace Clark with the aid of a fielding error. The Eagles held onto the 2-1 lead through the final inning and a half to earn the victory.

Leading USI was junior
Grace Clark, who drove home a run in a two-for-three performance. Junior
Lexi Reese continued her hot streak with a two-for-three outing chipping in a run. Sophomore
Marleah Fossett joined the hit parade with a two-for-three performance of her own.

Haylee Smith earned her sixth victory of the season, pitching a complete game, allowing six hits and just one run, while striking out two.

In the second contest, senior
Sarah Owens earned her second complete game shutout victory in the circle, pitching a full seven inning shutout, allowing five hits and striking out seven.

USI got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by junior
Haley Hodges and a wild pitch.
Â
Hodges drove in another run on an RBI single to add to her team-high total of 31 RBIs.

The Eagles added the final two tallies in the top of the seventh inning when
Grace Clark doubled to right field to score
Shelby Tate and
Haley Hodges.
Offensively, the Eagles were once again powered by the middle of the order. Hodges finished a perfect four-for-four in game two, knocking in a pair of runs and scoring one of her own. In the Eagles' 5-0 victory, senior
Janna Green went two-for-three, while sophomore
Marleah Fossett added a hit and two runs and junior
Grace Clark chipped in a hit and two RBIs.

Owens moves to 6-1 in the circle for the Eagles with a team-high 54 strikeouts.

USI returns to action on Sunday, when the Eagles face William Jewell College in a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. in Liberty, Missouri.
