EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 17
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit before falling to eighth-ranked Quincy University, 7-4, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record go to 11-6 overall with Quincy going to 11-3.
The Screaming Eagles spotted the Hawks a 4-0 lead through the first two-and-a-half innings with all of the tallies coming on a solo blast and a three-run home run. USI responded in the bottom of the third with a three-spot, highlighted by the two-run double by senior catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana), to cut the deficit to 4-3.
USI's offensive explosion continued in the bottom of the fourth when senior rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) knotted the game at 4-4 with an RBI double. Quincy, however, retook the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth off of USI senior right-hander
Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) and sealed the victory with a final tally in the seventh for the 7-4 final.
Holder (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks in two innings of work. Junior right-hander
Lucas Barnett (Sellersburg, Indiana) started for USI, going the first five innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Barnett also struck out five batters.
At the plate, Kempf finished the day with three hits, a runs scored, and an RBI. Bertram completed the first game of the series with a team-best two RBIs.
The Eagles and the Hawks conclude the two-game series Sunday with a noon first pitch. The six-game homestand continues next weekend when USI hosts Bellarmine University for the start of the Great Lakes Valley Conference 2016 schedule March 25-26.
