EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball junior libero
Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) tied the program's single-match record for digs, but it was not enough to lift the Screaming Eagles to victory Friday night as they suffered a 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to visiting Missouri University of Science & Technology at the Physical Activities Center.
Farrell finished with 37 digs, including 21 in the fourth set, as she matched Amber Gogel's school-record mark. Gogel racked up 37 digs in a four-set win versus Quincy University September 7, 2007, back when sets were played to 30, not 25.
USI (9-15, 3-9 GLVC) rallied from a late two-point deficit in the third set to stave off elimination with a four-point win; but an 8-2 Missouri S&T run to begin the fourth frame proved to be too much for USI to overcome in a four-point loss. Trailing by as many as nine in the fourth set, USI rallied to get to within two points at 17-15, but a 4-1 Missouri S&T run took the air out of USI's sails.
Earlier in the contest, Missouri S&T (9-15, 4-8 GLVC) used a 7-0 surge to break an 8-8 tie in the opening set. USI was held to a negative .053 attacking percentage in the frame as it suffered the five-point loss.
The Eagles saw an early five-point lead evaporate in the second set as the Miners, who hit .303 in the second stanza, used runs of 6-2 and 6-1 to grab the two-point win and two-set lead in the match.
In addition to Farrell, USI was led by junior middle hitter
Te'Ayla Whitfield (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and junior outside hitter
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana). Whitfield had 11 kills and a pair of blocks, while Morris finished with 11 kills and 10 digs.
Senior setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) tallied 33 assists and 13 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist
Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) added 12 digs. Senior middle/outside hitter
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Illinois) chipped in six kills and three blocks.
USI returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Drury University for Senior Day. The Eagles will honor Shoultz and Zwissler as part of their Senior Day festivities prior to the match. The Panthers (16-9, 7-5 GLVC) are coming off a three-set loss to Bellarmine University Friday night in Louisville, Kentucky.
