EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team kept their hopes of a berth in the GLVC Tournament alive with a 4-0 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI saw its record improve to 9-8-0 overall and 6-8-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Illinois Springfield goes to 7-10-0, 4-10-0 GLVC.
With the win, USI's hopes for a berth in the 2016 GLVC Tournament stay alive. To earn a spot in the conference tournament that starts October 30, the Screaming Eagles need to win their final regular season match Wednesday versus Bellarmine University and for Quincy University (6-7-1 GLVC) to lose or for Lewis University (6-7-1 GLVC) to post a loss or a tie in their final matches of 2016. Lewis visits the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Wednesday, while Quincy hosts Truman State University.
Quincy holds the tie-breaker over USI after defeating the Eagles earlier this fall, while USI holds the tie-breaker over Lewis after defeating the Flyers, 3-1, in September.
The Screaming Eagles built a 2-0 lead by halftime on a pair of goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Freshman defender
Marie Auton (Ballwin, Missouri) put the Eagles up 1-0 at 36:54 on an unassisted blast from 35 yards for her first collegiate goal.
USI sophomore forward
Kennedy Moore (Evansville, Indiana) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at 43:06 when she put away a crossing pass from sophomore forward
Ryley Hancock (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was Moore's third of the season.
In the second half, the Eagles extended their lead to the 4-0 final with two more goals. Freshman midfielder
Loryn Willis (Cynthiana, Indiana) posted her second goal of the season to make the score 3-0 off a pass from senior forward
Gabby Korte (St. Louis, Missouri). Senior midfielder
Olivia Myers (Washington, Indiana) concluded the scoring with her first goal of season with Korte dishing her second assist of the half.
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper
Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) recorded her second shutout and career-high fifth win of the season, facing six shots and making three saves.
The Eagles' regular season concludes Wednesday when they host Bellarmine at 5 p.m. Bellarmine watched its record go to 11-2-3, 9-2-3 GLVC after a 1-0 loss to McKendree University this afternoon.
Bellarmine has control of the all-time series versus USI, 13-6-3, and is unbeaten against the Eagles in the last 12 matches, posting an 11-0-1 mark. Last year the Knights defeated the Eagles, 2-0, in Louisville, Kentucky.
