Cold shooting grounds Eagles in sixth straight loss

SOMERS, Wis.—An eight-minute long field goal drought was too much for University of Southern Indiana Women's Basketball to overcome as the Screaming Eagles' suffered a 72-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon.

USI (10-7, 3-6 GLVC) missed 13 consecutive shots during the last minute of the first half and the first seven minutes of the second half as the host Rangers turned a four-point advantage into a comfortable 12-point lead late in the third quarter.

The Eagles, who were 1-of-15 from the field in the third quarter, made up for that cold spell with some solid defense and good free throw shooting. USI held the Rangers to just six field goals and converted 9-of-12 attempts at the charity stripe in the third period as it kept UW-Parkside within range (51-41) heading into the final frame.

USI used a 9-2 surge midway through the fourth quarter to trim UW-Parkside's advantage to just four points (62-58) with 3:43 to play; but that was as close as the Eagles would get as the Rangers made 10 straight free throw attempts to hand USI its sixth consecutive loss.

The Eagles, who saw a 7-0 UW-Parkside run turn a 22-22 stalemate into a seven-point lead late in the first half, went just 1-of-8 from the field during the final 3:43 of the game.

Early in the contest, the Eagles trailed 13-4 before using a 12-2 surge to take a brief one-point lead. USI cut UW-Parkside's 29-22 advantage to four points with just over a minute to play in the second quarter before an 8-2 Rangers' run sent the Eagles into the break facing a 37-30 halftime deficit.

USI, which had just 13 turnovers in the game after committing six turnovers early in the first quarter, shot just 33.8 percent (22-65) from the field. The Rangers, meanwhile, shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field.

Sophomore forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Indiana) had a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Eagles, while junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) had 10 points and three assists.

Senior guard/forward Tara Knapstein and sophomore center Shelby Cheston each had 12 points to lead UW-Parkside.

The Eagles return to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when they host the University of Indianapolis at the Physical Activities Center.
