EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday evening in Evansville, Indiana.
USI freshman midfielder
Kasper Bjoro (Oslo, Norway) provided the game-winner with 51 seconds left in the second overtime period on a volley off of a pass from
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was Bjoro's first of the season and the first of his collegiate career.
The Eagles attack started strong with a goal just past the ten minute mark of the first half from sophomore midfielder
Riley Belding (Columbus, Indiana) off an assist from Bjoro and junior forward
Braiden Acton (Evansville, Indiana).
The Panthers would respond with two goals separated by just six minutes at the 31:36 and 37:54 marks to take a goal advantage.
USI responded midway through the second half with a goal by senior
Logan Ball (Newburgh, Indiana) at the 69:17 mark that was assisted by Acton.
Defensively, the Eagles rose to the task in the final 65 minutes of play led by sophomore goalkeeper
Adam Zehme (Orland Park, Illinois). Zehme earned his first win between the posts for the Eagles, while the defense for USI did not allow a single shot on goal in the second half.
As a team, the Eagles outshot the Panthers overall, 23-7, and on-goal, 8-3. USI also dominated corner kicks, earning 11 to the Panthers' 4.
USI returns to Strassweg Field for a home match against Union University on Sunday at noon to wrap up a pair of season-opening contests at home.
