EVANSVILLE, Ind.– The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team battled before a late goal dropped the Eagles, 3-2, Friday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles see their record go to 3-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the GLVC, while the Miners rise to 2-3-0, 2-1-0 GLVC.
USI jumped on the board first with a screaming shot from senior
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Ind.) off an assist from sophomore
Pedro Castro (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil). Castro weaved his way through traffic before finding Weinzapfel at the top of the 18-yard box for the goal.
Missouri S&T responded with two straight goals of their own to take the 2-1 lead heading to halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles would battle for chances, but could not find a breakthrough early on. With just over 15 minutes remaining, USI freshman
Kasper Bjoro (Oslo, Norway) fired a point-blank shot on goal that was blocked. The save deflected back to Weinzapfel who ripped the ball past the keeper for the equalizer.
The game appeared to be headed for overtime when the Miners' Maxi Fuchs sent in a shot that was deflected and found the back of the net with just under five minutes to play which would prove to be the game-winner.
Overall, the Eagles and Miners were near even in shots, 13-12, and corner kicks, 7-5, both in S&T's favor.
The Eagles continue their conference weekend Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they host Drury University. The Panthers enter Sunday's contest 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the GLVC after suffering a 1-0 loss at Bellarmine University on Friday evening.
