ST. LOUIS—Essentially playing its third game in less than 12 hours, the No. 17 University of Southern Indiana softball team saw its season come to an end as No. 1 University of Missouri-St. Louis dealt the Screaming Eagles a 7-0 setback to claim the NCAA Division II Midwest Region #1 Tournament title Sunday night.
Missouri-St. Louis (47-6) took advantage of three straight two-out walks and a wild pitch to break a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning. The Tritons capitalized on a USI error in the fourth inning to score four unearned runs and extend their lead to 5-0.
Another USI error in the fifth inning helped the Tritons add two more runs as USI found itself in an insurmountable seven-run deficit.
Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, Hannah Perryman, allowed just one hit as she retired the final 17 batters she faced.
Senior pitcher
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs, two earned, off eight hits.
USI ends its season with a 39-11 overall record and its best winning percentage in program history (.780). The Eagles, who made their second NCAA II Tournament appearance in three years, made a sharp turnaround in 2015 after finishing the 2014 campaign with a 22-23 record.
Both Harmening and senior second baseman
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) played their final collegiate games Sunday, closing the book on two of the best players to put on a USI softball uniform.
Harmening finishes her career as the Eagles' all-time leader in wins (74), innings pitched (796.1), and strikeouts (642). Offensively, she ranked second all-time at USI in doubles (47) and home runs (25); and tied for second in RBIs (127).
Dorsam, USI's second-ever GLVC Player of the Year, concludes her career ranked second all-time at USI in runs scored (142), third in home runs (24), and fourth in RBIs (126). Her 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in 2015 were the second-most in a single-season in program history.
Missouri-St. Louis advances to play the University of Indianapolis in the NCAA II Midwest Super-Regional, which is May 15-16 in St. Louis.
Note: USI's last four NCAA II Tournament losses have come at the hands of Missouri-St. Louis…in three trips to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament under Head Coach
Sue Kunkle; the Eagles' only losses have come to GLVC teams.
