Chavarria, Wright lead Eagles to doubleheader sweep

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior right-handers Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) and Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) posted complete-game victories as the Screaming Eagles swept a doubleheader from the University of Indianapolis, 3-1 and 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles saw their record go to 10-14 overall and 7-11 in the GLVC, while the Greyhounds finish the afternoon 15-13 overall, 11-7 GLVC.

In the opener, Chavarria threw a strong seven-inning complete game as the Eagles defeated the Greyhounds, 3-1.

The Eagles got all of the offense Chavarria would need in the first inning when they strung five-straight hits together, including RBI-singles by senior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) and freshman designated hitter Drake McNamara (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), to lead 2-0. USI would get an insurance run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Gunn to make the score 3-1 after UIndy pushed a tally across in the top of the second.

Chavarria (3-2) would make the 3-1 lead stand up by allowing only three hits, an unearned run, and two walks, while striking out eight hitters on his way to his second-straight complete game win.

In the nightcap, Wright (1-4) posted his best outing of the season with a nine-inning shutout of the Greyhounds. He allowed four hits and struck out three batters over a dominant nine innings.

USI pushed the only run of the game across in the bottom of the third when McNamara singled through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded, scoring junior leftfielder Jaylen Quarles (Indianapolis, Indianapolis). The Eagles, who stranded eight runners on base, missed a chance to score in the opening frame of game two when senior centerfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) was thrown out at the plate.

Taking a break from its GLVC schedule, USI visits Charles Braun Stadium and the University of Evansville Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Aces hold a 30-19 all-time series lead over the Eagles after USI took the meeting last year, 9-4.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field next weekend when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a pair of doubleheaders April 11-12. Start time on Saturday is slated for 2 p.m., while Sunday is scheduled for noon.
