CLERMONT, Fla.---Powerful hitting allowed for the University of Southern Indiana softball team to pick up another two wins Monday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.
The Screaming Eagles (11-1) started with a 5-2 win over Bloomsburg University before extending its winning streak to 4-0 after an 8-4 win over University of Mary.
In the opening game, senior
MacKenzi Dorsam's (Dubois, Indiana) stolen base in the bottom of the second, which resulted in a throwing error by the catcher, allowed junior
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) to cross home plate for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth following a double-base-hit, RBI single by Dorsam, another RBI-single by junior
Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana), and a two-run homer by senior
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana).
Bloomsburg tallied two runs in their portion of the fifth and sixth but USI's defense made sure that was all that the Huskies were able to produce, taking the game 5-2.
Harmening (7-0) racked up another win in the circle, while pitching time was shared between Sarah Bertoni and Caitlin O'Connor, of the opposing side, with Bertoni taking the loss for the Huskies.
USI had a dominating first-inning performance in its game against University of Mary, scoring five runs that featured an RBI-triple by sophomore
Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana).
Mary didn't see any action until a leadoff homer by Taylor Mendez in the bottom of the second, followed by an RBI-double in the bottom of the third.
Up 5-3 in the top of the fifth, the Eagles would put two more runs on the board for a 7-3 lead, which caused a pitching change by the Marauders.
Clark tallied another RBI, while UM's Mendez added another homer to her count with the game ending in favor of the Eagles, 8-4.
The Eagles have Tuesday off and continue doubleheader action Wednesday with Wilmington University at 10 a.m. (CDT) followed by Shippensburg University at Noon (CDT).
