Eagles shutdown by Pumas

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was limited to four hits and dropped a 4-1 decision to Saint Joseph's College Sunday morning in Rensselaer, Indiana. USI saw its records go to 5-11 overall and 2-8 in the GLVC, while Saint Joseph's finishes the morning 8-10-1 overall, 4-5-1 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles were held hitless through the first three innings, while the Pumas managed a pair of first inning runs off of USI junior right-hander Tyler Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana). USI junior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) and junior designated hitter Jaylen Quarles (Indianapolis, Indiana) picked up the Eagles' first two hits with two outs in the fourth, but were left stranded.

Saint Joseph's extended its advantage to 4-0 in the seventh inning with two more runs off of Nichols. USI chipped away at the deficit in the eighth inning when junior centerfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) singled and came home on a RBI-double by senior shortstop Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) to make the score 4-1.

The 4-1 score would be as close as the Eagles would come as USI would go down in order in the ninth.

Nichols (1-3) picked up the loss for the Eagle after allowing the four runs on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out a career-high 10 batters.

USI and Saint Joseph's are slated to finish the four-game series Monday with a noon doubleheader in Rensselaer. The Eagles, following Monday's doubleheader, return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field to start a six-game homestand, beginning with Bellarmine University Wednesday.
