EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The fifth-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a two-game sweep of Notre Dame College (Ohio), 6-5 and 6-0, Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI goes to 3-3, while Notre Dame starts the spring 0-2.
USI senior shortstop/right-handed pitcher
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) provided a walk-off single and threw three scoreless innings in relief as the Screaming Eagles defeated the Falcons in Tuesday night's suspended game, 6-5, in 11 innings.
Chavarria, who had four hits and four RBIs at the plate, provided the game-winning single through the left side of the infield, scoring junior first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) for the 6-5 victory. Cope, who had three hits and scored three times in the contest, had moved into scoring position after doubling to lead off the inning and moving to third on a passed ball.
On the mound, Chavarria (1-1) followed three USI hurlers from Tuesday night to throw three scoreless innings on Wednesday to get his first win of the year. The junior closer allowed two hits and struck out a pair of batters in his third appearance of the year.
The Eagles completed the two-game sweep of the Falcons with a 6-0 victory in the regularly scheduled game. USI pushed a tally across the plate in the first inning; moved the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth; extended the margin to 4-0 with a run in the fifth; and pushed the score to the final of 6-0 with a two-run rally in the eighth.
The opening inning run was the only tally the Eagles hurlers would need as three USI pitchers combined for the squad's first shutout of the season. Junior right-hander
Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) recorded his first win as an Eagle in his first start of the year, allowing four hits and two walks over seven shutout innings. Holder (1-0) also struck out a pair of batters.
Junior right-hander
Ben Blaize (Henderson, Kentucky) followed Holder with a shutout eighth, while senior right-hander
Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles with a scoreless ninth.
At the plate, freshman leftfielder
Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles with three hits and three RBIs, while freshman centerfielder
Deshaun Johnson (Shelbyville, Kentucky) had a pair of hits. Chavarria also added a pair of RBIs to his team-high nine through six games.
The Eagles complete their seven-game homestand this weekend when they open Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which was picked to win the GLVC East Division, is hosting Truman State for a four-game slate, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
The USI-Truman series is the first match-up between the two programs in GLVC action. USI leads the all-time series, 5-1.
