EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior forward/center
Anna Hackert (Evansville, Indiana) recorded her 41st career double-double as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team held off a Truman State University second-half rally en route to a 65-53 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
Hackert finished with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, five of which came in the final five minutes of the contest. The double-double, her 16th of the year, breaks a tie with USI and GLVC Hall of Famer LeAnn Freeland for first place all-time at USI and moves Hackert into a tie with Africa Sherrod (2002-03) for the most in a single-season at USI.
The Screaming Eagles (18-5, 10-3 GLVC) shot 60 percent on 15-of-25 shooting in the first half and led 37-28 at the break. They extended their lead to 47-36 early in the second half, but an 8-0 Truman State rally cut USI's cushion to just three with 11 minutes to play.
The Eagles, however, responded by sandwiching a 5-0 run and a 6-0 run around a Truman State basket to build a commanding 58-46 lead with four minutes remaining in the contest.
Freshman guard/forward
Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) had a layup and sophomore guard
Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) scored on an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Eagles up 52-44 with eight minutes to play.
Senior guard
Autumn Miller (Louisville, Kentucky) followed free throws by Grooms and fellow classmate
Taylor Stevenson (Olney, Illinois) with a three-pointer to cap off USI's 6-0 spurt.
In what amounted to be an 11-2 run that lasted eight minutes, the Eagles held the Bulldogs (12-9, 6-7 GLVC) to just 1-of-9 shooting, 0-of-4 from behind the arc, while forcing three turnovers.
USI's lead never shrunk below nine points the remainder of the contest as the Eagles earned their fourth straight win while strengthening their hold on a bye in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. USI has a two-game lead over fifth-place Quincy University and is three games ahead of the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University, who are tied for sixth overall.
In addition to Hackert, the Eagles had three players finish in double figures in the scoring column. Grooms added 14 points and six rebounds, while Marcum chipped in 10 points.
The Eagles, who are just two wins shy of their ninth 20-win season in program history, return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Missouri-St. Louis.
