Drummond boosts Eagles to 81-70 victory

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore guard Bobo Drummond (Peoria, Illinois) dropped in a season-high 23 points to lead the Screaming Eagles to an 81-70 victory over Truman State University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI goes to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the GLVC, while Truman State sees its record go to 16-7, 8-5 GLVC.

The victory, which was the third-straight for the Eagles, clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament and put USI two wins away from securing a first-round home game. The GLVC Tournament features the top 12 team from both divisions, with seeds one through four receiving first round byes and seeds five through eight hosting first round games. The Eagles still have a chance to receive a first-round bye, but are three-games out of the top four in the GLVC.

In the victory, USI spotted Truman State a 9-0 lead to begin the contest and trailed 12-2 at the 15:10 mark. Senior forward Austin Davis (Freeport, Illinois) and junior forward George Edwards (Chicago, Illinois) ignited the USI offense by scoring all 13 points in a 13-0 run to give the Eagles a 15-12 lead with 10:55 left before halftime.

USI would extend the lead to six points, 28-22, with 5:38 remaining in the half when Truman State rallied to tie the game, 28-28. Drummond, who had 10 first half points, would score USI's final five points of the opening 20 minutes and give the Eagles a 33-30 intermission advantage.

In the second half, the Eagles and the Bulldogs would trade leads until the 10:29 mark when USI took command for good with a 5-0 run and built a 61-56 advantage. USI would push the lead to nine points three times before getting its largest lead of the game, 11-points, with the 81-70 final.

Drummond finished the game with a team-high 23 points on eight-of-14 from the field, four-of-nine from beyond the arc, and three-of-three from the charity stripe. Edwards followed Drummond in the scoring column with 18 points, while senior guard TeNale Roland (New Albany, Indiana) and Davis rounded out the double-figure scorers with 17 points and 12 points respectively.

Davis also tied a career-high for the fifth time this season with a team-best eight rebounds and made a career-high four steals.

USI returns the road next week when it travels to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest and Maryville University Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off. The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the PAC February 19 when it starts its final homestand of the regular season when the ninth-ranked University of Indianapolis visits for a 7:30 p.m. GLVC East match-up.
