EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore guard
Bobo Drummond (Peoria, Illinois) hit a jumper with 0.8 seconds left to propel the Screaming Eagles a 69-67 upset victory over the sixth-ranked University of Indianapolis Thursday night at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which has won six-straight games and seven of its last eight contests, goes to 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the GLVC, while UIndy sees its record go to 21-3, 13-3 GLVC.
Drummond floated the game-winning shot over the defense from inside the left arc after breaking free of the defense and driving toward the lane. The sophomore guard, who entered the game averaging 17 points per contest in the last five games, had been held scoreless by the Greyhounds for the first 38 minutes of the contest.
The match-up of the GLVC rivals that went down to the final bucket was a battle from start to finish, featuring 14 lead changes and 9 ties over the 40 minutes of action. The Greyhounds had the largest margin during the game, twice posting six point leads, while the Eagles largest margin during the battle was two points four times, including the final score.
In the first half, USI and UIndy went up and down the floor trading leads before the Greyhounds seemed to take control, 21-16, with 9:06 remaining to halftime. The Eagles would rally back to take the lead, 28-27, at the 1:15 mark, but the Greyhounds got the final bucket of the first stanza and took a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, USI senior guard
TeNale Roland (New Albany, Indiana) kept the Eagles in the contest, striking for 16 of his game-high 25 points during the final 20 minutes. Roland was a blistering five-of-eight from the field, four-of-six from downtown, and two-of-three from the charity stripe in the second half.
After the Greyhounds posted their second six-point lead of the night, 50-44, with 10:20 left the Eagles chipped at deficit and regained the lead, 67-66, with 1:38 left on a pair of free throws by junior forward
George Edwards (Chicago, Illinois). UIndy knotted the game at 67-67 with a free throw with 1:14 remaining, but committed a costly turnover with 27 ticks left that set the stage for Drummond in the final seconds.
In addition to Roland's 25 points, USI had three additional double-digit scoring performances. Senior guard
Gavin Schumann (Cincinnati, Ohio) deposited 12 points, while Edwards and senior forward
Austin Davis (Freeport, Illinois) had 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Davis also posted his first career double-double by tying a career-high with 11 rebounds.
The victory, which was USI's first win over a ranked team this season, keeps the Eagles in the hunt for a first round bye in the GLVC-Tournament, just two games behind the Greyhounds with two games to play.
USI concludes the 2014-15 home schedule Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when it hosts Saint Joseph's College for Senior Day. The Eagles will honor Davis, Roland, and Schumann after the game Saturday.
Saint Joseph's fell to 6-20 overall and 3-13 in the GLVC after losing at third-ranked Bellarmine University, 95-71. The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Pumas, 51-20, after winning the first meeting of the season in Rensselaer, Indiana, 78-66, in January. USI has won the last 10 match-ups with Saint Joseph's and is 12-1 versus the Pumas at the PAC since 2000.
The Eagles finish the 2014-15 schedule on the road February 26 when they travel to play Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky.
