Eagles breeze by Tigers, 87-55

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Four University of Southern Indiana women's basketball players recorded double figures Tuesday night as the Screaming Eagles defeated Midwest Region foe Salem International University, 87-55, at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (7-1) shot 55.9 percent from the field and dished out a season-high 28 assists as it recorded its fifth straight win.

It took more than two minutes for USI to get on the board, but once sophomore guard Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois) drained a three-pointer with 7:35 to play in the period, the Eagles took off.

USI scored eight straight points as junior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois) followed Harshbarger's three-pointer with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Eagles up 6-3. Freshman forward/center Mikayla Rowan (Brazil, Indiana) capped the run off with a layup to put USI up by five.

Rowan, who finished the game with a career-high 10 points, was one of four players to score in a 9-0 USI run that put the Eagles up 19-9 later in the period. Harshbarger, who finished with nine points and a game-high seven assists, also hit her second three-pointer of the quarter during the outburst.

Salem International (0-8) cut USI's lead to six early in the second quarter; but Wascher wrapped a pair of layups around two three-pointers, both by sophomore guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois), in a 10-1 USI spurt that pushed the Eagles' advantage to double-digits (31-16) for the remainder of the contest.

Grooms, who finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and a career-high six assists, scored all of her 12 first-half points in the second quarter, including six points in a 10-4 run that put the Eagles up 44-25 at the half.

USI, which out-rebounded Salem International, 44-24, outscored the Tigers 20-15 in the third quarter and 23-15 in the fourth to run away with the 32-point victory.

In addition to Grooms and Rowan, the Eagles got a game-high 22 points and six rebounds from Wascher as well as 12 points and a career-high five assists from junior guard Kendyl Dearing (Huntingburg, Indiana). Sophomore forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Illinois) added eight points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) dished out a career-high six assists.
