EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Comebacks were the theme of the match as University of Southern Indiana Volleyball swept the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 27-25, 25-18, 30-28, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (19-9), trailing 24-20 in the first set, manufactured a 8-1 comeback to set the tone early on the afternoon. The Screaming Eagles and Tritons traded runs through the early portions of the set, but UMSL found their stride, running up a four point advantage late. USI stormed back as seniors
Erica Oberbroeckling and
Erin Goldschmidt served the Eagles to victory. In the first set, the Eagles benefitted from six UMSL attacking errors, while USI hit .267.
USI saw its attack catch fire in the second set, as the Eagles flew to a 25-18 triumph. USI trounced the Tritons with a .375 attacking percentage, while UMSL hit just .059. UMSL committed 9 attacking errors in the set to just two for the Eagles.
In a wild third set, USI once again appeared to be done before firing up and securing a 30-28 come-from-behind victory. During five instances, the Tritons had set point, but the Eagles were resilient and consistently had an answer. With UMSL leading 28-27, USI pushed forward and compiled a 3-0 to secure the set and match victory.
Junior setter
Quin Shoultz came just three kills shy of a triple-double with seven kills, 37 assists, and 11 digs on the afternoon. Senior defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt aided the Eagles attack with three service aces.
The Eagles produced a balanced offense in the conference clash with four players tallying nine or more kills in the three-set sweep.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Eagles host Bellarmine University in a mid-week clash at the PAC. The Eagles conclude the 2015 regular-season with a home weekend featuring the University of Illinois Springfield on Friday night at 7 p.m. and McKendree University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
