Second half spurt not enough for Eagles

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to Saint Joseph's College on Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles fall to 3-6-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the GLVC, while the Pumas finish the day 5-4-0, 4-4-0 GLVC.

The Pumas scored first just after the ten minute mark off a rebound of a saved shot. Despite getting a hand on the first shot, the Eagles were not able to control the miss and Saint Joseph's pounced and scored.

Saint Joseph's wasted no time in recording their second goal four minutes later. The Pumas controlled the ball and found the back of the net from the top of the box.

The Eagles entered the second half and quickly gained momentum. USI took charge as the more aggressive side missing multiple close chances early in the second half. The Eagles jumped on the bored on a goal by sophomore Pedro Castro (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil), as the Brazilian received the pass from sophomore Riley Belding (Columbus, Indiana) and weaved his way through traffic to score.

Despite multiple shots and several near misses, the Eagles were never quite able to find the equalizer late in the second half

Saint Joseph's earned the advantage in shots 17-14, but USI dominated shots in the second half 12-6. The Eagles also owned the edge in corner kicks on the afternoon 7-4.

The Eagles hit the road next weekend for a pair of GLVC games up north. USI starts the weekend with a contest against Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois on Friday evening at 7:30 pm. The Eagles conclude the roadtrip with a 2:30 pm battle on Sunday against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
