Eagles post road-upset of Tritons

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer withstood a late charge by University of Missouri-St. Louis before holding on to post the 2-1 upset Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI saw its record climb to 5-9-2 overall and 4-9-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while UMSL drops to 10-2-4 overall, 8-2-4 GLVC.

The victory also breaks USI's five-game losing streak and six-game winless streak.

The Screaming Eagles jumped out in front for the first time in five matches when junior defender Kelsey Smith scored on a free kick at 8:29 of the first half. The goal was Smith's team-best fourth of the year.

USI would hold the 1-0 lead through the intermission, despite trailing in shots, 5-4.

In the second half, USI pushed the lead to 2-0 when sophomore forward Haley Rheinlander scored at 47:26 off a pass from freshman forward Ryley Hancock. The goal was Reheinlander's second of the season.

The Tritons, who outshot the Eagles, 15-4 in the second half, cut the USI lead in half at 83:07 and looked to have the momentum.  The Eagles' defense would shut down the Tritons the rest of the way and hold onto the 2-1 victory.

Between the posts, USI senior goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann led the Eagles defensively and posted her first victory of the season. Lohmann faced a total of 20 shots in the match, making 12 saves. The 12 saves was one short of tying a career-high for Lohmann.

USI concludes the season-ending three-match road swing Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they visit 19th-ranked Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. The Knights saw their record go to 14-1-2 overall and 11-1-2 in the GLVC after posting a 2-1 win over Maryville University this afternoon.

USI trails 12-6-3 in the all-time series against Bellarmine despite tying the Knights, 2-2, in double overtime last fall at Strassweg Field. USI will be looking to break a 12-match winless streak against Bellarmine in the season finale and post its first win over the Knights since 2004.
